If you've spent any time researching author marketing, you've probably heard the phrase "build your platform." While that's good advice, many authors immediately assume it means constantly promoting their books on social media. In reality, some of the most effective author platforms are built on something much simpler: genuine connections with readers.
An author platform is more than a marketing tool. It's the space where readers get to know you, your work, and your interests. When readers feel connected to an author, they are more likely to follow future projects, recommend books to others, and become long term supporters.
Focus on Providing Value
One of the biggest mistakes authors make is treating every post as a sales pitch. Readers rarely follow authors because they want to see endless advertisements. They follow authors because they enjoy the content being shared.
Consider offering content that provides value to your audience, such as:
- Behind the scenes insights into your writing process
- Writing tips and lessons learned
- Reading recommendations
- Updates on works in progress
- Personal stories related to your creative journey
This type of content helps readers feel included while demonstrating your expertise and personality.
Build Community, Not Just Followers
Numbers can be helpful, but a highly engaged audience is often more valuable than a large, passive one. Instead of focusing solely on follower counts, focus on building relationships.
Respond to comments when possible. Ask questions. Encourage discussion among readers and fellow writers. Celebrate the successes of others within your community. These interactions help transform casual visitors into invested supporters.
Readers appreciate authors who feel approachable and genuine. A simple response to a comment can leave a lasting positive impression.
Create a Consistent Online Presence
Consistency matters more than frequency. You do not need to post multiple times per day to build an effective platform. Instead, create a sustainable schedule that you can maintain over time.
Whether you publish a blog post twice a month, send a monthly newsletter, or share regular updates on social media, consistency builds trust. Readers learn what to expect and are more likely to stay engaged.
The key is choosing channels that fit both your audience and your personal workflow. It's better to maintain one platform well than to spread yourself too thin across many.
Make Your Website the Hub
Social media platforms change constantly, but your website remains under your control. Your website should serve as the central hub of your author platform.
At a minimum, consider including:
- An author biography
- Information about your books and projects
- A blog or updates section
- Contact information
- A newsletter sign-up form
Your website provides readers with a reliable place to find information about you regardless of changes to social media algorithms or trends.
Think Long-Term
Building an author platform takes time. Meaningful communities rarely appear overnight. Instead of chasing rapid growth, focus on creating authentic connections and consistently serving your audience.
The authors who build lasting platforms are often the ones who show up regularly, provide value, and engage with readers as people rather than potential customers.
When you prioritize relationships over promotion, your platform becomes more than a marketing strategy. It becomes a community.
